I am Nikhil. I am a PhD(CSE) student at Search and Information Extraction Lab (SIEL), International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT-H), Hyderabad, India. My interest lies in the intersection of three fields: Natural Language Processing, Formal Ontologies & Artificial Intelligence. Currently, I am working in the area of domain specific ontology enrichment under the supervision of Prof. Vasudeva Varma, who is also the Dean R & D of IIIT-H. As part of my PhD thesis, I am collaborating with Novartis to build a medical ontology by mining the social web.

Prior to joining PhD, I worked as a research assistant at Ubiquitous Knowledge Processing (UKP) lab,Technical University Darmstadt, Germany. At UKP, I have worked with Christian Stab on the problem of "Using distant supervision methods for Argumentation Mining". During my research assistantship I was supervised by Prof. Dr. Iryna Gurevych, director of UKP. I was also an active member of the "Deep Learning for NLP" special interest group at UKP.

I did my masters (MS By Research) from IIIT Hyderabad. For my masters thesis, I have worked on various problems of Information Retrieval and Extraction like Focused Crawling, Web Page Classification, etc. (see the Projects section for a detailed report). As part of my masters thesis work, I have designed a graph based algorithm for selecting diverse URLs from Twitter to be used as seeds by a genre specific focused crawler. I have presented this work in WWW 2014. I have also proposed metrics to evaluate diversity of a domain specific crawl.
